Visit the Setting of Spielberg’s New Film – War Horse
Steven Spielberg’s latest film War Horse is set in Dartmoor, showing the best of rural England during the First World War. The film begins with the friendship between a horse and a man called Albert, the film is touching and follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets.
Dartmoor provided a stunning landscape for many of the scenes in the film. There are rolling valleys, wide open landscapes, waterfalls, rushing rivers and ancient eerie forests. The scenery can be welcoming and perfect for walks, but at the same time can be challenging, with a varied terrain which can be extreme in some locations.
The film highlights the beauty of Dartmoor and Spielberg praised the stunning location by saying, “I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse on Dartmoor... And, with two-and-a-half weeks of extensive coverage of landscapes and skies, I hardly scratched the surface of the visual opportunities that were offered to me."
During filming, a restored 17th century coaching inn located in Tavistock, called Browns Devon was chosen as a base for the production team and was visited by Spielberg.
Tavistock is a great base to stay if you are looking to explore Dartmoor and the picturesque villages down in Devon. Tavistock itself is a quaint town boasting architecture of local stone, unique shops, a market, art galleries and a theatre.
Plymouth is only 15 miles away and is a lot livelier, offering many shops and restaurants for a great day out. However if you’re looking for a tranquil and relaxing getaway, then there are plenty of pretty villages close by including Lyford, which is just 7miles from Tavistock.
Dartmoor is a popular place for walkers, and after watching War Horse you’ll certainly want to visit. It provides some fantastic walks to suit everyone, whether you enjoy hiking on rough terrain or just fancy exploring the forests and taking a casual stroll.
With the weather improving and spring not far off, Dartmoor is set to become very popular over the next few months due to the release of War Horse.
