Oxford, although a relatively small city concentrated around its famous university, is a place of contrasts. On the one hand, the city centre has a wonderful collection of architectural sites of interest, such as the medieval university colleges, libraries and museums. On the other hand, Oxford has many green areas located in or near the heart of the city, such as University Park.

University Park

University Park is open to the public and free of charge. It is open from 8am until the early evening and is a great place to relax with your friends or family. The park borders Cherwell River. In spring and summer, you can take in the sun and calm atmosphere. Go for a refreshing walk in autumn and winter, taking in the natural sights and sounds.

Sites of Interest

University Park is home to a number of interesting sites. The Cricket Pavilion dates back to the early 1880s and was designed by Sir Thomas Jackson. There is a circular duck pond built in 1925, featuring a central island. The Coronation Clump, a clustering of trees, commemorates the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

For those of a scientific persuasion, there is the Genetic Garden. This was built according to the precepts of Professor Cyril Darlington, to demonstrate evolution in microcosm.
