Galway city is loaded with things to see and do. This is a cosmopolitan city very much in touch with its roots as well as being a modern metropolis with all the attractions you would expect of a regional capital. The hinterland too is very beautiful and there are plenty of things to do in the surrounding countryside. Hotels in Galway City Centre allow you to access to the wealth of options on your doorstep.

Galway City Museum has a number of fine displays and exhibitions about the history of Galway city and its important role in the development of the West of Ireland. Other noteworthy sights to track down are the Cathedral with its eclectic combination of Gothic and modern architecture, Nora Barnacle House and the Spanish Arch (the Blind Arch). The former was the home of James Joyce’s wife, Nora and part of his inspiration for is novel Ulysses. The head arch was built as an extension to the city walls and are on the bank of the river Corrib.

There are many tours available, as well as cruises down the Corrib River. These are normally arranged from offices in the centre of town and a great deal of local sightseeing can be packed in during the course of a single day.

Festivals such as the Galway Arts Festival and the Galway Music Festival run throughout the year and the performance arts are also well represented in Galway. The Town Hall runs a year-long programme of musicals, operas, concerts, live theatre, films and comedy at numerous venues.

There are eight Blue Flag beaches in the area, and for children the Galway Nimos Pier hosts indoor skating over winter. There are several leisure and activity parks with indoor and outdoor playgrounds and picnic areas.
