The wonder that is Rio and its attractions

By Anne Mary Subscribe to RSS | March 6th 2012 | Views:

For a city to be known worldwide by an abbreviation of its full name is a clear indication of its popularity and that certainly is the case for the magnificent Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro. This fabulous city is the most visited in the entire southern hemisphere due in no small measure to its reputation as the carnival capital of the world. Sitting on a strip of land on the Atlantic coast there are attractions galore, with some of the most famous landmarks and one of the most well known beaches anywhere on the planet.

The selection of the modern day Seven Wonders of the World has caused disagreements with many various structures put forward as being worthy, but the inclusion of the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer sitting 2,330 feet on top of Corcovado Mountain consistently makes most people's list. The awesome sight of the monument is literally unmissable from miles around, but everybody should take the opportunity to climb to the summit and take in the breathtaking views below. Equally well known is the almost iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain, which although considerably smaller than the Corcovado, is nevertheless a tourist magnet. Reached by cable car it offers great views of Rio and in particular Copacabana Beach.

The Rio shoreline stretches for more than 50 miles, and whilst Copacabana might be the liveliest of the many fabulous beaches with almost non-stop action day and night, Ipanema, Leblon and Barra are also very popular with sophisticated shops and great water based activities bringing in the tourists on a regular basis. People watches will have a field day at Copacabana with something going off in all directions seemingly all day.

Sport in the city is massive and it is probably a reflection of this that has seen the next football World Cup be awarded to Brazil for 2014 with Rio at the heart of things, and just 2 years later the Olympic Games coming to town. The Maracanã Stadium will play host the Final match of the football tournament and also the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games. No traveler should leave without paying this impressive ground a visit and sampling the atmosphere that only Rio can generate. There are regular Samba bands playing there throughout the year, so even for non sporting fans an opportunity may still present itself to be part of an event in the magnificent arena.

With these events in mind there is a lot of construction taking place with the recognition that there will be a need for additional accommodation. Flats in Rio de Janeiro are springing up everywhere and are of varying price ranges, with some top quality designs, together with some slightly more modest versions. Over the coming years there is likely to be some terrific opportunities for purchasing property for rental purposes.

Anybody taking up residence or even those on extended stay will have to find the time to take a journey of around 15 minutes to Tijuca Forest. This is all that remains of the Atlantic rain forest that once thrived in the area, but is still the largest urban forest on the planet and forms part of Rio's National Park. The magnificence of this stunning place simply has to be seen to fully appreciate its splendor, with white waterfalls, greenery everywhere, and exotic birds and animals keeping you company. Rio is regarded as one of the top destinations around the globe, any chance that presents itself to pay a visit should be grasped with both hands.
