Indian Railways, world’s fourth largest railway, operates 65000 km routes serving about 7500 railway stations in the country, and the time table of Indian Railways is well established and monitored.

Most of the trains are daily run trains, some of them once every alternate day, some more twice or once weekly. Trains operate in plains mostly and there are impressive haulage in mountainous regions and ghat sections, running as per Indian Railways time table.

Earlier times, Indian railways time table was printed region wise and distributed. They were printed every half year and released for the benefit of commuters.

All the regional time tables of Indian Railways were also carrying All India train information, in a separate section, while detailed time table would be given for the trains of the region. An Indian Railways time table reader used to go table after table linking connection from one junction to the other finally to find the route, although long distance tickets were issued as a single ticket.

The time table of Indian Railways also used to carry a railway route map, few pages describing the fare structure, rules and regulations pertaining to rail reservations, facilities offered in the train, apart from the time of arrival and time of departure from every railway station.

But things have changed and we are in digital world. Moreover, if we were go print railway time table and distribute to all users, we may have to spend millions of tons of paper. Considering these aspects, perhaps few others too, the Indian railways time table is now smartly coming digitally through its ‘’ portal.

The portal is well distributed with a number of links, whilst the main tabs give you facility to find your train and related details. For instance, you select the ‘From’ station as New Delhi and the ‘To’ station as Mumbai, instantaneously a pop up appears prompting you to click for seeing the trains connecting these two stations.

Once you click, you see the screen giving you the following information, distinctly and presentably:

•Train Number

•Train Name

•Pantry availability

•From Station

•Departure time

•To Station

•Arrival time

•Total hours of travel

•Running days

•Availability of seats in various classes

Added facility in the digital Indian Railways time table is that when you click the ‘AV’ meaning availability, a pop up comes informing you the fare details, including what it would be for senior citizens, male and female, besides normal tariff. Similarly, when you click ‘AV’ you are given berth availability details for the entire week.

Besides this basic information, the portal of Indian Railways time table also gives you a number of links and tables, including All India Rail Map, Fare table etc.
