Mallorca is Balearic Islands’ largest individual island with many interesting places and sights. Palma de Mallorca is the capital of Mallorca Island. The locals call Palma de Mallorca La Ciutat which offers a most scenic environment with its bountiful palms waving in the air.

There are about 320,000 inhabitants on Palma alone which is half the whole island population.

Town offerings

Palma offers an impressive and rich culture through the deep influences from the various diverse cultures from past epochs.

There are interesting and quaint shopping streets located around the town’s Plaza Mayor; the famous La Rambla is lined with beautiful buildings and impressive Baroque balconies that are distinct to the region. Up on a hill is Castillo de Bellver fortress which is of exquisite Gothic architecture. It has an elegant appearance that does not equate to a defending fortress for Mallorca. Today, the interior has a museum filled with valuable classical antiques and other archaeological findings.

The Cathedral is Palma’s most distinct landmark. The locals call it la Seo which was constructed in the 14th century and only completed in the 19th century. This cathedral dons many exquisite architectural excellences with a 20th century Antoni Gaudí interior while the Puerta del Mirador door faces the ocean and the chapels boast of Baroque artisany. The royal palace, La Almudaina, is built over the previous Alcazar which was a former Muslim residence for the kings during that epoch.

Delightful sights

There are outstanding Gothic civil façade structures in La Lonja of which some are used as museums to house the archaeological findings in the region. There is also the Consulado del Mar which is a 17th century Renaissance gallery building for today’s autonomous government.

Paseo del Borne showcases medieval streets with 19th century elegant palaces that boast of Italian influence in its architecture and structure.

Palaces are common around Palma with notable ones in Colom, Oleo, Villalonga and Oleza while many impressive churches can be spotted. Many Moorish influences are available in Mallorca as a remembrance of the past epoch such as the Arabian Baths and mosque remains.

Plaza de Cort boasts of a unique 17th century façade for its town hall with a Gothic style Iglesia de Santa Catalina church. The ancient town quarter behind La Lonja has 13th century and 14th century churches and castles.

From Palma de Mallorca one can get to any part of Mallorca to enjoy the numerous sights and offerings of this idyllic island. One can enjoy the sights by joining a local tour group or by bicycle.
