Cadiz is tranquil city more fondly known as the ‘silver cup’ for its idyllic location near the Atlantic Ocean where its peculiar coastline shapes the silvery ocean waters. This beachside city is very popular with tourists for the many offerings around.

Strategic location

The city of Cadiz has a beautiful beach promenade on the beach which makes tourists feel as if they are in Havana, Cuba. There is the boisterous sea on one side with colorful historical buildings sporting the other side.

Cadiz is situated between the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean with an interesting history.

History

Cadiz was set up by the Phoenicians who called it “Gadir” with the meaning “fortified city”. It was of significant importance to the Tartessos kingdom as a Phoenician settlement. The Carthaginians took over Cadiz when Hannibal rampaged against it over the Alps in a battle with Rome.

However, Hannibal could not sustain his conquer over “Gadir” which was soon captured by the Romans. Gadir became “Gades” and it blossomed as a Roman allied community. The Romans built many significant and important monuments such as an amphitheater and aqueducts.

Attractions

There are many attractions which Cadiz offers tourists; Cadiz Museum offers archaeology, ethnography and art displays with important remains of ancient Phoenician and Roman epochs like the invaluable Phoenician sarcophagi.

There are ancient remains from the Phoenician and Punic eras until the 18th century at the Casa del Obispo archaeological site in Cadiz. There are also the remnants of a 1st century BC Roman theater as the medieval city now stands over it.

Even today, the Roman aqueducts are being utilized to supply water to the city from Tempul which is located 70 km away. Another 1st century BC Roman factory remains has been turned into a production house for salted fish which was a leading industry in the past. Tourists would also find the Roman necropolis remains in Columbarios Romanos which depicts a Roman funeral cult.

Cadiz has plenty of historical monuments in the form of churches and palaces with numerous military and civilian buildings built between the Middle Ages and 20th century. Of worthy mention would be the Santa Cruz Cathedral which is exquisite in its structure with an impressive tower that offers amazing panoramic views of Cadiz and the Atlantic Ocean.

Another interesting historical monument at Cadiz is Carcel Real which was formerly a prison. Cadiz also offers some great entertainment at its local theater Gran Teatro Falla.
