Any sun lover and beach lover would love the miles and miles of sandy beaches at El Puerto de Santa Maria. One can walk on the soft sand or boardwalks that link up to bars and restaurants. The fine and golden sand with crystal clear waters is very impressive to all tourists; together with the strong winds, tourists can have a whale of a time windsurfing and scuba diving.

There are many renowned beaches in this district; one can take time to check out all of them. The Vista Hermosa Beach or locally known as Playa del Buzo faces the Atlantic Ocean and Cadiz city. This beach offers consistent waves that are suitable for windsurfing. It is cooler than other beaches on the Bay.

The La Puntilla beach has a bank protection which makes the waters calm and safe for swimming especially for children.

The Levante beach lies in isolation away from urbanized Cadiz. Its secluded location at the Natural Park offers cool green landscapes with strong breezes.

History

There is a legend to El Puerto de Santa Maria; it is purported founded by king Menestheus who was involved in the Trojan War. There are numerous palaces and monuments dating back to the 17th century and 18th century.

Some ancient monuments worthy of mention include the San Marcos Castle which was a mosque that was rebuilt as a fortified church. There are some churches, an ex-fish market, a bullring, and many Paleolithic archaeological findings.

There are many discovered remains of Spain’s oldest Phoenician city in this region. No tourist would be bored with the diverse offerings in Santa Maria.
