St Mark's Campanile
The city boasts of St Mark Square as well as St Mark’s Campanile. This is a beautiful clock tower, and in Italian, it is also referred to as the Campanile di San Marco. Like the Rialto Bridge, this spot has sported a clock tower since times immemorial, but the latest one that is seen today is 900 years old. The clock tower has withstood the tests of time. In the first half of the 16th century, there was some damage to this clock tower due to an earthquake. The tower was on the verge of falling. The clock tower was brought back to its present position after massive restoration job. In 1900s, the tower again collapsed. This time the tower was rebuilt from scratch and just identical to the original tower. One can have a magnificent view of the St Mark’s Square from the top of the tower.
