When in Puerto Rico one of the biggest attractions are the beaches. If you are visiting during the summer time, a peak season for beach going, you will find that nothing can get better than working on your tan and playing in the surf. The thing with Puerto Rico is that there are so many beaches to choose from, that it can get difficult narrowing down on the place to put down your beach blanket. Here is a small list that can really help.

There are several families that make an annual pilgrimage of sorts to come to the beaches of Puerto Rico. Of course you will want a wholesome atmosphere for your children to enjoy themselves in and one that really fits the bill for these requirements is Luquillo Beach. This is located around 30 miles towards the east of San Juan and is absolutely safe for families and couples looking for some fun time on the beach. The presence of coral reefs ensures that the beach is insulated from rough waters, which sometimes plague other beaches. The waters are calm, clear and safe.

There are a number of picnic areas here that one can make use of and several changing rooms and showers for those who require them. These are just some of the reasons that Luquillo Beach is a family favorite. It is also one of the most photographed beaches in Puerto Rico.

For the young at heart looking for some great surfing action, Playa Higüero at Rincón is where you should be headed. One of the best times to go out is between November and April when the surfs is at its best. This is one of the most popular surfing beaches and has even got itself the nickname of "Little Malibu." The surfing quality at this beach is of international standards and it was even one of the sites for some great international competitions. Some of the best experiences here are that of 16ft surf breaks.

If you are looking for some great swimming, then you must visit Playa de Ponce in the southern region of Porta Caribe. This is located on the south coast and the tide is always peaceful out here. The location, Ponce is the second largest city in Puerto Rico and the waters are much calmer that those on the northern side. Navigating the clear, calm tides then becomes much easier.
