SCMS- COCHIN has joined hands with the Government of India to work on the Rural Health Management pilot projects at a number of Community Health Centre’s and Primary Health Centre’s in Kerala’s Kannur and Malappuram districts. This is the first time that our country has taken up such an initiative and SCMS- COCHIN students are all set to provide assistance in accomplishing these ambitious projects.

A Scientific Society of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, known as the Centre for Development of Advanced Studies (CDAC), Thiruvananthapuram in association with Media Lab Asia, Department of Information Technology, Government of India has taken the responsibility to implement these projects in our country. CDAC is confident that SCMS would help in making these projects a success and have thus chosen them for this task.

The CDAC society members have asked the SCMS- COCHIN team to conduct the impact study for all the three pilot projects: Mobile Tele-Oncology Unit, Rural Health Management Information System and Rural Tele-medicine System. The students and faculty members at SCMS-COCHIN began the impact study with full enthusiasm in March 2011 and are moving at a steady speed. The extensive study involved in this project includes conducting field surveys, performing data analysis, interpretation and finally preparing the final report. The SCMS- COCHIN team handling this project is carrying out the impact study as per the set schedule and the CDAC members are quite impressed by this progress.

All the three health management projects aim at developing different health care solutions. While the Mobile Tele-Oncology Unit is basically a mobile Tele-medicine unit having facilities like tele-consultation software, satellite communication facilities and advanced medical diagnostic and treatment equipments. The Rural Telemedicine System makes use of electronic information and communication technologies for providing health care support to the patients located in remote villages. On the other hand the objective of Rural Health Management Information System is to improve the quality of health care services offered in villages by developing an IT-based health services model.

The work done by SCMS- COCHIN has been quite impressive so far and the CDAC members are certain that with the assistance provided by the SCMS Group team the project would soon be accomplished.
