Distance MBA v/s On-campus MBA
The introduction of Distance post-graduate study over the past decade has gained much goodwill due to the overflow of MBA students aspiring to work while they are studying.
Choosing to embark on an MBA is not always a straightforward decision. For people with established careers and families, the possibility of relocating and not earning for up to two years combined with the high cost of studying can be prohibitive.
However, on a general perspective there is no particular difference amongst a Distance MBA and an On-campus MBA. On-campus programmes typically require around two years of full-time study. Most MBA degrees are comprised of one year of core business classes, and another year of specialised study. The only difference between the majority of on-campus and Distance MBA is where the classes take place. While on-campus programs offer students time for discussion in person, Distance MBA programs use internet-based tools, discussion forums, interactive lessons, email and chat to facilitate interaction with faculty and fellow students etc. Distance MBA also provides the student with nearly a working environment and is able to share the thoughts of Great people- Business entrepreneurs, and well- experienced people in the area of management from across the globe.
Distamce MBA Programmes are accredited degrees, awarded by a valid University. The Programs are designed by some of the finest academic minds in the field of Management. Classes are often taught by a team of Professors and faculty, over the internet, using a unique Virtual Classroom platform that endeavors to provide you with the closest to ‘regular’ MBA experience.
The launch of the first Distance MBA was with 19 students, all subject to the same admissions criteria as candidates for its on-campus programmes , and study to gain the same degree. This happened in a business school offering courses of the University of North Carolina.
Susan Cates, executive director of the online MBA programme, says the first year will be a learning process for the school and she describes the students as pioneers.
She added, "We kept this first class small as we focused on quality and our determination to provide an exceptional educational experience as we learn the intricacies of high-quality online education."
There are some differences between the Distance and on-campus MBA programme . For example, the 'live' student-professor interaction occurs in a smaller setting than in a typical MBA class and there is less face time.
Cates says, "For this reason only, the Distance MBA can be told to be designed for working professionals looking to enhance their prospects rather than those looking to switch into new careers." Crucially for the validity of the programme , there are also many similarities between the two, which include using the same curriculum.
In addition, it is a fact that the Distance MBA programmes are also designed and taught by a group or more groups of exceptional professors who are in to the On-campus MBA itself over time. Hence, we can finally conclude by saying that there is no much difference in the courses provided in both modes except that pursuing Distance MBA can manage time efficiently.
