Batik clothing is a mixture of craft and art that becomes so popular in the world, especially in the fashion industry. Batik is generally known as magnificent art uses cloth as media. This is also known as the way to beautify cloth using dye and wax. Batik clothing has been known since several centuries ago and now it enters new era, especially after the fashion market recognized it as beautiful handmade. To create batik, “pembatik” or batik artist blocks out some parts of cloth by drawing or brushing it with wax that has been cooked. After it, the fabric is dyed. The areas that are covered with wax will resist the dye and it keeps the unique color of the cloth. The process of waxing and dyeing can be repeated tens or even hundred times to create more colorful and elaborate patterns based on the patterns that are created before. After the last dyeing process is finished, the wax will be removed and it means the fabric is prepared to be made as other forms like shirts, skirts, gown or many other things.

Batik could be very costly depends on the patterns and the difficulty. Every pattern has different meaning and sometimes it shows the origins. Batik has been admitted by UNESCO and it belongs to Indonesia only. There are public figures from Europe and America love batik, one of them is Nelson Mandela from South Africa and Barack Obama’s wife.

At present, batik improves so well after modern batik is presented to the market. Traditional patterns of batik is still created and worn by many people, but it is quite expensive than the modern one. The production equipment used by batik artist also more varieties based on the development of technology. The media used not only cloth but on many batik workshops, there are ceramics, papers, woods, metals and many other things can be used as batik media, including cars and homes.

Nowadays, batik also performs not only as traditional clothes but also other varieties. German car automaker, Mercedes has created special edition car with batik designs on its body. Pakaian batik is the one that are available easily when you visit Indonesia. There are also kaos batik or t-shirts that are really loved by travelers who visit the Southeast Asian country because it costs cheaper than other batik’s items.
