Mini vs Maxi – which dress is best for summer?
The great fashion debate over the style and practical merits of the mini dress versus the maxi dress has raged on for some time now. However, with both being equally on trend this season (and therefore readily available on the high street and online), which is really the best choice for your summer wardrobe?
With the immediate factor to take into consideration being the very obvious difference in length between the two, what are the pros and cons of each? Some may argue that the maxi is a perfect cover up if your legs aren’t exactly summer ready – who needs fake tan and waxing if you have a stunning, floor skimming dress? However, many would put forward the opinion that legs are made to be out in the summer and therefore what could be better than a daring mini dress to show off your perfect pins – especially if you are lucky enough to be on holiday somewhere warm!
With the British summer weather being unpredictable at best, some may be wary of donning a maxi dress when the risk of rain could mean your couture is dragged through muddy puddles! On the flipside, if you opt to wear a mini when the summer weather isn’t as warm as it could be, you are pretty much guaranteed to have to team it with a pair of tights and boots. Not necessarily the overall look you are aiming for in the height of summer!
Taking the weather out of the equation, which style would be best for a wearing on a day or night out? Dependent on the occasion, both have their strengths. Some of us would perhaps feel uncomfortable at a more formal event such as a wedding or Christening dressed in a mini skirt and high heels. These types of occasion are perhaps where an elegant and sexily understated maxi dress would fit the bill perfectly. However, if you are planning to hit the dance floor on a girlie night out, a fun and flirty mini dress isn’t going to get stood on or tangled up in your heels thus impeding your best moves!
Taking a more serious view for a moment, many may feel excluded from either style based on their shape and size. Some curvier women may not be too keen to get their legs out on display in a short dress while more diminutive ladies could feel swamped in a longer one. Happily, with many stores now having petite sections, there are maxi dresses which are specifically designed for those 5’3” and under. And when it comes to worrying about showing too much in a mini dress, the trick is confidence! Embrace your curves like Kim Kardashian and remember you don’t need to wear an outrageous bum skimming version! And if you are worried about your legs you can easily wear some funky patterned tights or leggings underneath.
In reality, there is no definite winner when it comes to the length of your summer dress! The choice is entirely subjective and since it is fair to say that both of these styles are here for the long haul, why not give both maxi and mini dresses a go and make your mind up as to which is best for you?!
