After this first year students will begin to seep further within Chinese society making more friends and developing more "contacts." By this time you would have passed the basics i.e. knowing not to send a clock as a gift, accepting business cards with two hands, and never sticking your chopsticks straight up into your rice. You would be excelling within your Chinese language courses and eventually will come the time where you will want to blow away your Chinese co-workers, friends, and acquaintances by showing off your language and cultural skills.

What’s a great way to shock your co-workers, bosses, friends, or teachers? By quoting classic works or literature by revolutionary thinkers, of course!

Listed below are some hand-picked quotations, sure to win you fame and fortune when you drop them in perfectly-pronounced Chinese at the next hangout and social event. These lines are so steeped in China’s history and culture that you’ll sound like a native.

Impressive Quotations to be remembered!

The revolution is not yet complete, comrades, keep up the fight!

Gémìng shàngwèi chénggōng, tóngzhì réng xū nǔlì!

革命尚未成功,同志仍需努力!

When you study Chinese in China expect to come across some old revolutionary sayings. Although less poetic and more modern, the ability to have this one within your arsenal of language ability most surely will do some surprising. This phrase originated from the "father of modern China" Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and is best used when faced with an uncompleted task or project, as it is great for mustering a stick-with-it, fight-to-the-end spirit.

Life is finite, knowledge is infinite.

Wúshēng yěyǒu yá, ér zhīyě wú yá.

吾生也有涯,而知也无涯。

When you study Chinese in China you will learn about an early Daoist philosopher Zhuangzi. Zhuangzi disagreed with Confucius about almost everything. Therefore, when one of your local friends busts out a quote from Confucius, to come back with a quote from Zhuangzi creates for a hilarious moment. This quote suggests to people that sometimes it’s time to stop thinking and get on with things. So, whenever someone quotes Confucius and wants to spend more time R&Ding a product that’s ready for the market. Why bother delaying? Hit back with this one liner.

The white sun resting against the mountains,

the Yellow River flowing into the sea.

In order to see even further,

climb up to the next floor.

Bái rì yī shān jǐn, huánghé rù hǎiliú.

Yù qióng qiānlǐ mù, gèng shàng yī céng lóu.

白日依山尽,黄河入海流。

欲穷千里目,更上一层楼。

This one is a bit lengthy. It originates from the famous Tang poem called "Climbing the Stork Tower" (《登鹳雀楼》 Dēng Guànquèlóu). Given its length, usually the last two lines, and sometimes just the final line, is used for urging someone to work harder. In a sense, for study Chinese in China beginners, it is the complicated way of saying "加油" (jiāyóu, come on). If your colleagues have done well on a project but you want to push them to work ever harder, you can simply clap them on the back and say "更上一层楼. Gèng shàng yī céng lóu. "
