EMI Shielding Equipments in Use
Electromagnetic shielding or EMI shielding does just what the name suggests. It blocks the electromagnetic field and reduces its strength. In other words, it ensures that the electromagnetic field is confined within an area or blocked off completely. The technique uses sheet metal, metal screens and metal foams to block the electromagnetic fields.
The shielding can also be provided by spraying the inside walls of plastic enclosures, housing the electronic appliances with metallic ink that usually comprise of small particles of copper or nickel materials. Once dried, the ink produces a conductive metal layer thus providing effective shielding. Enclosures are a perfect way to eliminate the unwanted noise in electronic devices. However, it is essential that the enclosure cover has good contact with the enclosure to create a complete conductive path. An EMI gasket is made up of silicone polymer material which has nickel graphite or silver coated particles embedded in it. These help to complete the conductive path.
Manufacturers specialize in various kinds of EMI shielding materials. A silicone rubber filled with carbon is an excellent shielding material. It is available in the form of sheets and also acts as an environment seal to prevent dust and moisture accumulation. These gaskets are also available as a wire mesh to improve resilience and prevent pollution. The best part of using wire mesh as a gasket is the flexibility it offers. It can be cut and fit to any size as required. The shielding can also be provided to electrical and electronic cables. This is made possible through mesh tapes. These tapes are plated with tin so that they can be subjected to soldering if required.
Managing EMI is a big challenge for most manufacturers. Devising EMI shielding equipments and EMI gasket is their way in order to ensure compliance and enhance the credibility of their products.
