Australian cities are the most sought after gap year destinations across the globe. Thriving Aussie cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Perth beguile gap year travellers with incessant sightseeing adventures, delectable ethnic cuisines and pulsating nightlife. However, Australian cities are not merely a tourist hot-spot but also offer plethora of backpacking jobs with handsome payouts.

The minimum paid wage in Australian cities is one of the best in the world, such that millions take air tickets to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth to earn fantastic money whilst exploring the superlative charms.

The Working Holiday Visa (WHV)

UK and Australia share reciprocal agreements enabling British nationals aged 18 to 30 to procure a working holiday visa (WHV). However, people over the age of 30 are generally denied a working holiday visa.

The Working Holiday Visa holders can stay in Australia for up to a year and work for a maximum of six months with any one employer. Furthermore, the working holiday visa holders may leave and enter the country any time during the one year period.

Travellers might be asked to provide evidence of an onward ticket or/and sufficient funds to purchase one and support the trip. Travellers should be mindful of carrying a certified bank statement showing AUD 5,000 (£2,120) in their respective accounts.

It is possible to obtain a second working holiday visa. However, for procuring the visa extension, applicants must have done seasonal work in a regional area for at least three months.

Other options for visa extensions include sponsorship, for which applicants must have an Australian company willing to back their application.

Working Holiday Visa Applications can be made online at the Australian Immigration Department's website with a fee of AUD 185 (£80).

Those willing to procure exhaustive information can log on to the website of Australian Immigration Department before buying air tickets to Sydney, Perth or Melbourne to check about the details and eligibility requirements as these are subject to change.

Backpacking Jobs

There is certainly no dearth of backpacking jobs in Australian cities. While tourists with air tickets to Perth get spoilt with unbelievable charms and amazing teaching jobs, those flocking to Sydney can easily find majority of jobs in retail, bars, restaurants, cafes or offices. Furthermore, hordes of backpackers buy air tickets to Melbourne every year for IT or accounting internships.

A popular job for backpackers is fruit picking that any backpacker can take with no skills or qualifications needed. Harvest factory work is yet another popular choice for backpackers.

Eating Out

Despite common perception of Australia being a costly destination, one can located very good budget eating joints with quality food served down under. While expensive restaurants are in abundance, there is surely no paucity of cheap eateries in Australian cities.

Backpacking Accommodation

Although Australia is one of the most high-priced backpacking destinations, yet with a little legwork one can locate several cheap backpacker hostels or budget dorms. Australian cities abound plethora of cheap hostels and budget dorms, which match up largely to top holiday resorts than a scrimpy dormitory. Predictably, most backpackers continue to stay in dorms or hostels while some end up in shared flats.
