What is the actual difference between spike-, and friction tyres?
Opinions on differences between friction tyres and spike tyres vary a lot. If you ask your grandfather about the set of tyres he would go with, he would most probably go for the spike tyres. If you ask your father, he might be somewhere in between and if you ask me, I would go for the friction tyres.
There are so many things that should affect your choosing of safe tyre (in Finnish: turvallinen rengas). It isn’t all about the weather and the condition you’re driving in, it’s also the consumption and the fact that is it good for the air or not. If you drive with spike tyres during summer time or even when the roads are dry, you will notice a light dust in the city that comes from the spikes hacking the road.
Now when you really are facing the situation when you have to make the decision you really have to go down to the basics and figure out that what will you’re daily driving routines be like. If you are driving mostly on the roads, which are covered in ice, there is an answer for you. You should definitely go for the spike tyres. If on the other hand you are driving mostly on the roads where there is a lot of snow, you should definitely be having the friction tyres.
Now it isn’t all about the driving rituals either. It also comes down to the factor of what kind of driver you are. If you are a skilled driver you can choose any one of the tyres and be just great off with them. Modern friction tyres are almost just as good on the slippery roads as are spike tyres if given to the right hands. The real problem is that if you are a bit unsure about you’re driving skills, spike tyres still have the most grip when talking about driving on the snow or on the ice.
Basically spike tyres are a solid solution for everyday driving if you are even thinking about this. If you are sure enough about your own skills and you don’t need the extra grip, you can go for the friction tyres.
