The good old tak-tak sound of typewriter is not gone, long killed and buried by the advent of computers. By now, surely the last typewriter last produced would have been sold and with no more manufacturing units remaining in the world, typewriters are history now. Godrej, an Indian company was the last to manufacture 500 odd typewriters last April. The company has converted the manufacturing plant into a refrigerator manufacturing unit.

Even though, machines that could do similar jobs were invented in 1700s, it was only in late 1860s that typewriter was manufactured. Thereafter, it was being used in almost all government as well as private sectors. Till date, it is in use in various government offices.

Earlier, it was a vogue amongst girls to go for typing classes. It was also a preferred qualification for the secretary post. It is still in some cases, in some jobs, typists are called for. It was also seen as a way of gaining an upper hand over others. Everyone had degrees and post graduations and it was the knowledge of how to use a typewriter that helped you to stand out of the crowd.

It was by early 2000 that computers began to be a common machine and slowly but surely it meant a slow death for the typewriters. Thereafter, it was computers that were in use everywhere. Slowly, it began to replace all the desks where typewriter had ruled for decades. In terms of value for money and efficiency, typewriters are still rated high by many. But then the day is not far away when this ever-reliable machine will be part of a museum and the next generation will look at it with curiosity as to how their grandfathers used to work with such thing.
