Something you want to know about Pool Plastering
Building a pool:
Concrete is the most common material used to build pools. The process begins by digging a hole in the ground and lining it with rebar. Then the drains, skimmers, return lines and in- floor cleaning system are put into place. It is then shot with gunite. Then the tile and coping stones are set in place. Finally, the pool is shot and troweled with plaster and once plastering is over, it is filled with water. Then the system is started up and balanced with chemicals.
Advantages of Plaster:
Plaster is an age old process of finishing many structures. It provides a water tight seal which the gunite or shotcrete beneath cannot provide. A plaster finish seal gives service for approx twenty years in ideal conditions.
Problems in Plaster:
Often a grayish hue appears in plaster which is known as mottling and prevents it from staying milky white. Stains often appear in plaster which is localized and distinct from the color of plaster. Most are caused by heavy metal minerals coming out from solutions and depositing in nearest structure they find. They may also remain suspended in water. Algae start to grow in the plaster due to the high presence of alkaline in the water. Alkalinity should be kept low to avoid this. Salts like magnesium and calcium deposit in the plaster, pipes and equipment. Etching takes place in plasters when the acidic level is very high. Cracks often appear due to extreme temperature variations. Delamination occurs when the plaster pops off from certain areas and has to be re plastered.
Plaster resurfacing:
Plaster is the most commonly used material for pool plaster. Often light or dark grey shades are used to absorb sunlight and save on heating costs. Another product that has gained popularity over the last few years is small smooth colored rocks in a resin like base which is known as pebble sheen; it looks very beautiful though is rather expensive. The other two options are painting or fiberglass.
