What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is basically getting some space on a web server. The scope of web hosting services is huge. The most basic is web page (website) and small-scale file hosting (sharing), where files can be uploaded via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or a Web interface, and can be accessed some time with registration or public.

Most of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) allows this service for the subscribers, to host website or upload some of the files to share with world or with only certain friends.

Two ways these can be done, personal website hosting can be cheaper or sometime free that because the ISP uses them as advertisement option. And its bandwidth will be very less, like if some 100 people try to access at the same time, can’t access them. Other way would be business purpose where it will be expensive it allow more bandwidth, many people can access at same time. (For Example: Consider Facebook, how much should be the bandwidth of 89.05 MB as of 2007)

Uptime of the Server

Website accessible and reachable via internet is how we measure the availability of the website, mean uptime of the server; uptime refers to the system itself being online.

Total time = 365 days per year * 24 hours per day * 60 minutes per hour = 525,600 minutes per year.

What kind of hosting to use, requirement of the application to be chosen by the customer. Considering software like database server software, scripting software and operating system. Most of the hosting offer Linux based web hosting it offers a wide range of different software. LINUX server is an LAMP platform i.e., Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP/Perl/Phyton.

Other things customer need would be the email address of the same domain name, multi-media for streaming media. (For example: Youtube or other online streaming site). The user does not have to worry about any technical aspects only concern is what is he wants to host.

The selection of the web ghosts and web hosting depend on the needs and requirements of your business requirement. Web hosting has taken all the worries in managing website which has also brought a new concept to online world.
