Motivation for using Open source design for your website is really strong. It’s always a preferred choice of a website designer. There have been many arguments and debates regarding the usage of the source code as regards to ethical and unethical practices, but open source still stands as the most popular platform for web design and development.

There is one school of thought which is sees the availability of source code as a positive and the right to modify it as a boon. With open source design, they are able to provide their customers with great flexible solutions. Another appealing aspect is the right to modify, redistribute and improve the code. Freedom given to designers and developers to modify code and create extensions that make life easy for users is one reason for the unbeatable popularity of open source design.

While all this is true, some also feel that there are some who misuse this freedom. There does not exist any authority that will restrict or regularize the usage of this source code availability. Further, there is one question that makes the choice of choosing an open source platform very difficult. There is no single “ownership” so there is a lot of uncertainty about the future. No guarantees as to when development of certain software shall cease. The other thought that bothers many is standardization of charges. If code is modified, there can be no common grounds on which cost of the new product can be decided upon. The biggest ethical issue in open source design is “forking”. Part of the code under free and some under licensed distribution.

Whatever the reasons for liking it or disliking it, open source design is not going anywhere. It is here and it is popular. It provides end users with excellent features, business owners with ease in management and developers a challenging and interesting platform for creating fresh and refreshing web applications and web solutions.
