Bandar Seri Begawan Nightlife
Brunei is an alcohol-free country, so if you can’t contemplate an evening without a tipple you have come to the wrong place. However, there are plenty of other things to while away the evenings in Bandar, and it’s true that you can get a drink if you take your own bottle along to the Tagz Lounge of the Sheraton Utama Hotel and buy mixers on the premises. Even if you’re not actually a guest there you should have no problem getting in.
Other Bandar Seri Begawan hotels serve up delicious international cuisine in luxurious surroundings, without the habitual bottle of plonk of course, and there are also lots of good eateries spread throughout the town. This isn’t exactly a rave centre, but there are plenty of opportunities for more serene entertainment such as a quiet meal with great views.
The local delicacy is ambuyat, a starchy dish derived from the Sago palm which is well worth trying, and there is no shortage of other fare from around the world. There is an interesting selection of cafes and restaurants in the Gerai Makan area on the waterfront in the south eastern sector of Bandar. Eating in this region means that you will also get a nice view of the famous stilt villages whilst enjoying your meal.
If you want to get to know how the locals relax, try dropping in to one of the numerous coffee shops (Kedai Kopi) of an evening and sip the traditional strong, sweet coffee accompanied by cheap and cheerful local food.
