The Marbella History

Marbella is a wonderful place in Spain and also a nice place to spend a vacation. In this article we are going to read more about the history of this ancient city.

Marbella is a very ancient place. Civilizations in this place were there much before the Christ. Human civilizations were there in a mountain called as Sierra Blanca in Marbella. Archeologists found a lot of things that were used by people and also some remains of humans from these mountain sides which date back to the Neolithic and the Paleolithic ages.

There has been a constant research about this place. A recent study here has shown that there were Punic and Phoenician settlements somewhere during the seventh century Before Christ (BC). These settlements were found in the area called Rio Real.

There are evidences which show that there have also been Roman settlements in this place. They were mainly in the Old Town. The Roman culture is evident because of the thermal bath and the Roman Villas.

There is a Christian Basilica right from the times of the Visigoth. This place is known as the Vega Del MarPaleo. This is one of its kinds. There is nothing like this in the entire Spain.

In the modern era the city of Merida holds great importance. It remained a hub of railway in the twentieth century of Spain. There has been good industrialization in this part of Spain in that era. There have been many significant developments in the city in terms of improvements in the infrastructure in last few decades. Spanish tourism authorities have special focus on Merida in this era and the city is getting good tourists every year from all parts of the world for the same reasons.

After this for sometime the Marbella was ruled by the Muslims. During the Muslim rule this was a very famous place. It also became a city that was walled. A huge castle was built and there were only three entrances for city. Though one gets to see the Castle even today the others like the doors and moat are ruined.

In 1485 the Catholic King Fernando occupied Marbella and this was engraved in the Toledo Cathedral. One can see it in the choir area. When there was a change from the Muslim to the Catholic culture the structures in Marbella underwent a major change. The Medina which is now known as the Old town was destroyed and was made an open square. New streets were laid to lead to the square.Economy was totally dependent on livestock and agriculture in those days. It was also famous for the wine. Tourists used to flock for the Marbella wine because it was a lot tastier and drier vineyards were also given preference because of this.
