New York Visit Pass: Interesting Sites to Visit

The Museum within the City of New York was founded in 1923 to protect New York City's historical past. This is a heritage museum as well as an art gallery that receives government assistance as a non-profit organization. It is located in Manhattan on the Museum Mile part of Fifth Avenue. It is on the north end between 104th and 103rd Streets by Central Park.

The Museum Mile runs from 82nd Street to 104th Street on the Upper East Side. This section of Fifth Avenue is a component of the prestigious Carnegie Hill neighborhood. At least 10 museums and galleries are located within the mile so that it is a really dense show of culture. In June of each year collaborating museums market the Museum Mile Festival by offering free admission and/or outdoor art fun-based activities.

In 1982 the Museum of the City of New York received the Gold Medal Award from the Hundred Year Association of New York. Yearly since 1930 this honor has been offered to acknowledge fantastic contributions to New York City. This honor has usually gone to individuals such as Rudolph Giuliani in 1998.

The present location of the museum is within a five floor limestone and brick structure built in the Neo-Georgian-Colonial style. It was created by Joseph J. Freedlander and construction lasted from 1928 to 1930. Formerly the museum was at the historic Gracie Mansion looking over the channel within the East River referred to as Hell Gate. Gracie Mansion is now the official residence for the New York Mayor.

There's a comprehensive collection of photos for which the Museum from the City of New York is famous. Jacob August Riis was referred to as a campaigner to prevent slums and a societal documentary photographer who photographed the impoverished side of New York. The Riis Collection at the museum houses one of his most well-known photos called "5 Cents a Spot."

The American photographer Bernice Abbott was noted for her black-and-white photos of architecture and urban style of New York City throughout the 1930s. The museum has a few of her most famous photographs like the Blossom Restaurant, the Flatiron Building, the Greyhound Bus Terminal and Herald Square in Manhattan.

There are many other exhibits within the Museum of the City of New York that all center around the town and the people. For instance, one exhibit is devoted to a brief history from the city as a important seaport. There are many models of ships on display in addition to a seven foot sculpture from the steamship inventor.

There are outfit collections which include a frock worn by Barbara Walters. There is another assortment of antique collectible toys that is certain to delight. There's so much more to see which include lots of paintings, furniture, hard to find books, military services things and a cinema collection. This documents the Broadway cinema during the golden age.
