The Basics of the Camera and Photography for All
It was in the 1800s when the use of the camera & photography began to take root. Today, everyone who can press a button is guaranteed to be able to take a picture that is not out of focus. Because everyone enjoys taking a picture, this is a fine time to learn more about the camera and basics of photography.
How a camera looks like has not changed much in 20 years. The big difference is the insides of the modern gadget. If you are able to take a peek inside one, you will recognize that it consists of chips and boards, much like a computer.
But the basic things that make cameras work has not changed. All cameras are lightproof boxes with a hole. A lens is attached to the hole and focuses light towards a sensor which could be film or a chip.
Because film used to be a major cost in photography, its absence in modern cameras means that thousands of pictures can be taken by everyone without spending a dollar. If you were discouraged earlier on by the expense of photography as a hobby when you were younger, such is simply not true today. If you have the time and willingness to learn, you will soon develop the eye for taking good pictures.
Those who have developed the craft of picture-taking will be comforted by the fact that the same principles still apply. Composing, lighting, and knowing what makes a camera work are still important skills. Give anyone who already has the eye for photography, a camera, and whether it is an SLR or a compact model he can give you beautiful shots in return.
Before, if one wanted to have pictures to hold in hand, then he must rely on having a darkroom or have his film developed by a commercial outfit. Today, the darkroom is replaced by a computer. What was once done manually by a technician is now done by imaging software running in computers.
Before, you gave prints to your friends if you wanted to share your pictures. While prints still exist today, the most common way of showing you images to everyone is by uploading them to the internet. Once they exist on web pages, they can be downloaded and copied endlessly without losing quality.
The most common cameras sold today are called point and shoot or compact models. These devices are very easy to use and have a friendly price. With the LCD monitor found at the back of the camera, it composing the picture is very easy.
Of course one could always choose SLRs if finer control on focusing and exposure is wanted. These are more expensive of course but one has more choices on the type of lens to use. One good thing is that these cameras work much the same way as the older SLRs of yesterday.
Because it is very easy to take pictures nowadays with digital cameras, it is very easy to overlook that the basic skills of composition and exposure are still important. That is why everyone is encouraged to know the basics of having a camera & photography in order to get more from this fulfilling hobby. If such is done then everyone can proudly share his pictures with the whole world.
