The Up Side to Down Sizing
There are many benefits to downsizing to a smaller less expensive home. Downsizing does not have to be painful. Perhaps the children have all grown and left the house so now you find yourself an empty nester a few too many empty rooms. Perhaps you or a spouse has been laid off in this terrible economy – definitely a stressful situation. Sure the family home is sentimental it’s filled with plenty of holiday and life cycle memories but the move to a comfy smaller home can be a celebration.
Downsizing will ultimately pleasantly surprise you with many new perks and you can create new memories. You are de-cluttering your life. Let’s face it living in the same house for many years you are bound to collect a little excess. Your home is supposed to be your castle not the storage unit. Getting rid of all this excess will not only de-clutter the home but it will de-clutter your mind.
Where do you begin? Once you know you will indeed be moving follow these basic steps to help cope with the sense of loss and to recognize the opportunities that are waiting to be discovered.
>> One at a Time – Tackle the cleaning one room at a time so that you do not become overwhelmed. Begin by picking a room that is not used very often – probably a guest bedroom. Begin sorting the items into categories like: keep, toss, yard sale.
>> Closets – If you have not worn it, used it, missed it for a year then get rid of it! Get the family involved. Ask the kids what they want to keep and give them a time limit to come and claim those items.
>> Part Ways – Now that the closets have been cleaned and you can actually see the walls it’s time to donate gently used items to a non-profit and claim that tax deduction. You know the old saying One man’s junk is another man’s treasure have a yard sale and earn some cash.
>> Xeriscape – In the new home create a natural landscape for your yard. Get a smaller house or condominium. This will require less maintenance, no water, and less money to maintain.
Remember to give yourself plenty of time to go through the process of cleaning out closets and getting rid of things you won’t be needing. You’re going to want to look through he old photo albums, read the old letters and take time to reminisce.
The downsize process can be beneficial you will be amazed at how you will begin to see more money in your pocket. Moving to a smaller less expensive location will save you money in many ways including:
1. Lower utility bills
2. Lower property taxes
3. Less upkeep expenses
4. Reduce time to clean house
5. Peace of mind
When you recognize that you must move for whatever reason keep in mind that there really is a silver lining. You will feel so much better with less stress in your life. Once your all settled in and you decide to go shopping – before you make a purchase ask yourself if this purchase is something you want or something you need. If its something you want – sleep on it before you make that purchase. Getting rid of financial pressures is an awesome feeling. Just get creative and come up with new memories and a new normal.
