A damped transducer shortens reflected pulse allowing the equipment to resolve closely spaced defects. The device manufacturers can provide focused transducers for improved sensitivity, resolution, large selection polarized ceramic composition, single crystals, polymers and piezo-composite materials to vary the performance of the equipment. These ultrasonic transducers have an integral orientation sensor, a processor and a display. The representation of the imaging plane as shown on the display is based on electrical signals generated by the orientation sensor. The orientation sensor is a bi-axial gravitational sensor which is composed of two orthogonal sensing toroids for sensing rotation about any axis lying in a horizontal plane.
This device is made up of an active element, a backing and a wear plate. The active element used in this equipment is a piezo-electric or single crystal material which converts electrical energy to ultrasonic energy and vice-versa. The backing is a highly attenuative and dense material that is used to control the vibrations of the equipment crystals by absorbing the energy that radiates from the back face of the piezo-electric element. The main function of the wear plate in this device is to protect the piezo-electric transducer element from the environment. These plates are selected to safe guard against wear and corrosion.
