This can work in both ways, by either urging a member to speak or asking someone to remain silent. Another important technique is the brainstorming exercise to get as many ideas as possible. In this, you need to make sure that the group as a whole comes up with an uninterrupted flow of ideas before the actual discussion begins.

You will come across a long list of facilitation techniques but it totally depends upon you what you need that works best for you. Depending upon the situation you are in and the kind of participating members you have on board, choose a technique which brings out your best managerial skills.
