A Look at Different Type of Hydraulic Systems

There are different types of pumps available. Some of them are hydraulic in nature. However, it becomes often difficult to sort out the correct hydraulic systems. Have a look at different types of hydraulic pumps available presently:

• Gear

• Vane

• Axial

• Radial

• Gerotor

The hydraulic system design for each type as mentioned above varies distinctively. Have a review of each type mentioned above.

Gear pumps are most appropriate for pressure limit below 3000 psi. They work at a constant displacement which makes them less efficient. However, they are simple in application and much cheaper in price. More importantly, they are highly durable. They are best used for simple hydraulic systems. These systems should not be used for working pressure greater than 180 bars.

Vane pumps are ideal for low pressure and higher flow output. They are also simple and cheaper in price. However, they are reliable and more efficient than gear pumps. They are also used for working pressure not greater than 180 bars.

Axial pumps are designed in such a manner that variable outflow can be achieved while pressure being controlled automatically. These are available in two major design patterns: swash plate/valve plate & check ball/wobble plate. Working pressure for axial pump is around 350 bars with displacement capacity of 1 liter per revolution. Swash plates are easier to manufacture. They are more economical. However, there is also a certain disadvantage of these plates. They are highly prone to oil contamination.

Radial pumps are normally used for small flow intensity but at a very high pressure. Pressure can be around 650 bars. However, variable displacement is not possible at all.

Gerotor pumps are considered to be highly efficient. They have quality sound level and possess pressure flow capability.
