The Barbiturates, a New Band Emerging from Derry, NI
One of the latest bands to join the musicians' database for the City of Culture 2013 event in Derry, Northern Ireland, is a fresh and exciting, newly emerging rock band by the name of 'The Barbiturates'.
The five members of the band, Geoffrey Street (singer/ song writer), Jamie Harkin (bass guitar), Patrick Walker (rhythm section), Martin Allen (drums) and Connor McClean (lead guitar), have been together for some time now, and recently announced the completion of their first EP. The ten brilliant tracks presented by The Barbiturates on 'Get your Boots on', as this EP is titled, give listeners a good idea what this talented group of young men is capable of.
These tracks make it difficult to place The Barbiturates into a specific pigeon-hole. Some of their songs, such as 'The Tearpeople', 'Trigger Happy' and 'Greed', for example, have a distinct punk or grunge-like flavour, while 'The Trouble and the Times', 'Sick and Tired', 'Vampires' and 'Fireflys' have a far mellower feel to them.
The band's innovative flair is well documented in 'Hang the Bankers Part 1'. Listeners should be aware that there is no need to 'adjust the set', so to speak, this really is what the track should sound like. In other words, expect the unexpected while listening to this weird and wonderful track.
What all of this new band's tracks have in common are lyrics they have obviously spent some time considering carefully, excellent music and some brilliant effects. Thanks to these effects, some of the band's tracks have a feel of Pink Floyd about them.
In any case, they are well worth listening to, which is made possible at The Barbiturates at SoundCloud, as well as on YouTube, where four of the band's songs - 'Snub Live at Carnhill', 'Fame', 'Tearpeople Live at Carnhill' and 'Vampires' are currently posted.
A planned recording of eight more tracks - some of which are revamped versions of older songs, while others are brand new - at the Nerve Centre was unfortunately delayed, but the band is making the most out of the time until recording can be rescheduled by working on another new set of exciting material.
In short, there is much to look forward to, and fans are eagerly waiting for these latest tracks to be added to the SoundCloud site. In the meantime, The Barbiturates are also working on getting some gigs organised. At the moment, anyone interested in booking them for a gig can contact them via one of the members, Martin Allen. Simply drop him a note via his e-mail: msaa84@yahoo.co.uk and he will get in touch.
To keep informed of what is happening, fans can also follow The Barbiturates through their group on Facebook, where the latest gossip, news and developments are regularly being posted. These guys are on the move, without a shadow of a doubt, and all their already existing fans are hoping that The Barbiturates will ultimately achieve the success their hard work and talent should be rewarded with.
