How to Properly Store Various Popular Music Mediums
Today the main kind of music medium sold is a digital MP3 file, but before, music was always distributed on a physical medium. It can be a nightmare to locate an old collection and discover that none of the items play like they used to. Each different type of music medium needs a slightly different environment to keep it functioning right.
Storing MP3s may seem straightforward and easy to do, but it is much more challenging and important than one may believe. For this reason it is very important to have a reliable hard drive devoted to storage. There is an excellent way to back up externally without having to compromise reliability. Instead, buying a normal internal hard drive for a desktop PC and installing it in an external USB box will be better in the end. The hard drive has the freedom of being installed inside a computer or getting switched to another enclosure if the USB enclosure fails.
CDs are one of the simplest mediums to store for a long period of time, but there are still some conditions. The most effective thing that a CD can be stored in is a book that has a material other than plastic for keeping the music in place. The fragile nature of all plastics within the casing does not require a lot of heat to morph whatsoever. Placing the CD book into a sealed storage container further helps protect it against hot temperatures and humidity that cause aging. It is generally recommended to store CDs in an air conditioned environment to avoid any sort of slight warping.
Storing CDs is very similar to how tapes are stored. The tape is very sensitive to magnetic fields and heat, so keeping them in a sealable box that is safeguarded works best. Billy Idol tapes can go bad very quickly and rust if humidity is able to reach them easily.
Vinyl records also need to be sealed away, but their size presents an issue the others do not have to deal with. There are custom made vinyl record cabinets out there that seal and fit the Beatles vinyl albums best, but they are often too expensive. Typical cabinets are the norm for many places. This works, but using an enclosed area will keep the dust and elements from all the Nirvana vinyl records. Simple cases can easily store the albums and they may not even be important for areas that are not dusty or that have low humidity.
