Dos and Don’ts of Slate Flooring
Slate tiles for use in flooring are becoming more and more popular, due to its versatility and durability. Its aesthetic value also plays a large part in choosing slate flooring for new construction or renovations, in both commercial and residential properties. With slate tiles and flooring, you’ll always have a stylish and functional product that brings value to your home.
Do’s
1.Consider the area where you want to install the slate tiles. Make sure the type of slate you choose is appropriate for the climate, weather, and foot traffic of the area you plan on laying down the tiles. This will ensure the longevity of the flooring.
2.Always read all warranty information that comes with the slate tiles and slate flooring you purchase, so you are installing it and caring for it correctly. If you don’t, you risk damaging or marring it. Doing so, will not only ensure your installation is done appropriately but also that you can maintain the warranty on your flooring.
3.Look for color variations in the tile, and work it into your pattern or design.
4.Hire a professional to lay the tile instead of taking it on yourself. This can save money on costly mistakes, and save you time by having someone else do it professionally.
5.Take the time to layout your tiles in a “dry run” first, to make sure the pattern you choose is what you want and looks good with the design and layout of your space.
6.Use an appropriate slate tiles sealant. A few to consider: high-gloss (this one gives the tile a “wet look”), low sheen (a reflective look, but not as shiny as the high-gloss variety) and natural finish (also known as no-sheen).
Don’ts
1.When placing your slate tile order, don’t forget to allow for breakage or other unforeseen mistakes.
2.Don’t fail to inspect your subfloor with any kind of loose materials or dirt. Overlooking these little specks can cause uneven installation of your slate flooring, and cause trouble in the long-run.
3.Don’t apply a sealer to slate tile that’s been waxed or oiled! If you do this, it can cause marks that will be difficult to remove later.
4.Never install your slate flooring on a wet surface. Any type of trapped moisture is bad when installing slate flooring (or any flooring for that matter).
5.Don’t begin the grouting process too soon. Most manufacturers recommend waiting at least a day before grouting to make sure the mortar is set correctly and firm.
