Anti-Roll Bar – a Discussion

Anti-roll bar or a sway bar or a stabilizer is a tube which connects the right part of the suspension system to left part and vice versa. The point of connection lies in the lower arm of the suspension system. By providing a connection, it maintains the right and left portion to equal level. Most of the sport cars have both back and front bars whereas most of the cars have front bars. By adding the roll resistance of the springs, the body roll reduces which is the main function of anti-roll bars.

This is an essential thing to deal with the road regulation. This bar is also known as sway bar which is mainly a torsion spring made to resist the roll motion of body. It consists of a u shaped steel bar that connects the body with the right and the left parts. There is a flexible joint which connects each end of the bar to an end link. In turn, the end link of the sway bar is connected to a spot near the wheel or the axle. This is done to move the forces from a heavily loaded axle to its opposite side. The first function is to lessen the body lean. This is reliant on the whole roll stiffness of the vehicle.. The increased stiffness of the roll does not alter the whole weight transfer but only lessens the body lean. The other function of the bar is to adjust the handling balance of the car that is a most important function as well. Although, there are some benefits with the anti-roll bar but the main drawback is that on a broken road, it generates side to side body motion and jarring.
