Hurricane - the Nightmare That Hounds Man Every Day

As hurricanes are those deadly monsters that can bring various kinds of disasters to the area which gets affected, it's not a surprise that emergency managers want better calculations related to its commencement. Today, we can track the path of a hurricane, though accuracy regarding its forecast for intensity is not giving better results. As the deadly storm will smash everything on its way, it's important to know the intensity of the storm, duration and course.

Geostationary satellites that track environmental changes measure heat radiations in the upper atmosphere and based on that data scientists calculate the speed of the wind and its direction. With the emergence of two new satellites, the NOAA-15 and NOAA-16, it became easy for hurricane researchers to collect temperature readings from oxygen molecules in the air. As satellites using for these purposes can view invisible winds in the hurricane environment that are crucial to create a big destructive storm, it will alert people dealing with weather forecasting. In weather forecasting centers, they will verify the atmospheric temperatures and the visual light images of the clouds and feed it into prediction models to get a clear picture about the hurricane movement.

Some of the most expensive hurricanes that hit the United States of America are Hurricane Camille in 1969, Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Hurricane Charley in 2004 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Hurricane Camille is the second strongest hurricane that hit the United States in the 20th century after the Great Labor Day Storm in 1935. This hurricane, which belongs to category 5, had a minimum pressure of 909 millibars, but the people of that time were unable to predict the speed of the final wind because all measuring devices were destroyed by that time. It is expected to exceed 200 miles per hour. Camilla took life of nearly 200 people and caused damage in billions of dollars. Based on its outcome, the storm is called the greatest catastrophe ever to strike the country and perhaps the most significant economic weather event in the world's history.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Andrew affected the Bahamas, the southern Florida and the southcentral Louisiana regions of the country. This particular hurricane originated from the West Coast of Africa and it moved to Bahamas at a speed of 120 mph and then to Florida at a speed of 140 mph. At its peak, Andrew had a minimum pressure of 922 millibars. In that storm, which lasted for eleven days, 26 people died and properties worth $25 billion got damaged. After Hurricane Andrew, the next strongest hurricane that affected the country was Charley. This storm hovered over the island of Jamaica for over 24 hours and caused significant damages to homes and crops, before moving to the Grand Cayman Islands and Cuba.

The third deadliest storm in the U.S. history is hurricane Katrina. It splintered into the U.S. Gulf Coast and destroyed the beachfront towns in Mississippi and Louisiana. On delayed rescue efforts, 1,800 people lost their lives, while millions of people became homeless. When it hit New Orleans, 80% of the city got submerged into the water and thus it became a toxic pool of sewage, chemicals, and corpses. A year after the incident, the population of New Orleans became just half of what it was before the storm hit. Hurricane predicting and home alarm systems are there in the market just like ADT Home Security System for protecting our homes and we can monitor the weather changes and escape from calamities.

Protecting your home from a category 5 hurricane is relatively impossible, but you can minimize its impact and save huge amount spending for repairs by insuring your house and by taking precautionary measures. Some of the commonly available products that can lessen the impact of hurricanes are use of plywood, fabric panel, hurricane glasses, roll-down shutters and garage door braces.
