Dedicated Servers: What are they?
As a webmaster you will no doubt come across many web hosting services that offer many different things and some you might not fully understand. Domain hosting is of course one of the more well known necessities for when you have a new website and you want the world to see it.
For new webmasters trying to get a handle on the available technology, being bombarded with terms can be very frustrating. You will hear or read things like FTP, HTML, POP Servers, Shared Hosting or windows hosting and Linux hosting. It can really make your head spin. Although it is important that you learn all you can, today’s article will focus on a dedicated server and its function or purpose.
What is a dedicated server?
Technically a dedicated server is a single computer in a network, which is ‘dedicated’ to serving the specific needs of that particular network. For example, you may have a dedicated computer/server, serving all of your printers needs in an office environment. In some cases, a computer may be needed to control all communications going on throughout the network with other computers. Put simply, one computer is dedicated to keeping track of conversations (communications) between other computers.
When it comes to a web hosting company, typically the user rents the server, software and of course the internet connection needed from the web host. Should just anybody consider renting a dedicated server? Well, this will depend greatly on the type of business you’re running. If you have a simple site set up for personal, or even a small business, a dedicated server more than likely won’t be needed at this point.
Overall a dedicated server will better meet the needs of a larger business and there are several reasons for this. Because a dedicated server usually provides necessary elements for one customer alone (most of the time a big business), the client can easily customize any hardware or software set-ups. With a dedicated server a client has faster data access and can accommodate high traffic to their site without technical issues.
Business clients or basic customers, who look to a web hosting company to rent a dedicated server, expect great customer service. The web hosting services must include working closely with clients to make sure all their needs are being met.
Another great advantage of having a dedicated server is you can easily create several domains on that one server. So, if a business or company has many divisions or even chain outlets, a dedicated server will things much more cost-effective and efficient. They won’t have to worry about each division trying to find suitable web hosting.
As you can see a dedicated server can play a big part in any company, and in some cases in your own home. Many webmasters make it a career taking care of many different domains. But, you must remember that a web hosting company is only there to rent the server and help with technical issues if they should arise – for the rest you are virtually on your own.
