They can guide you perfectly which skill you should learn in order to be a professional designer. One of the best software for this purpose is known as Adobe Illustrator. This will give you the idea and link to make vector images and show what lies in your best interest.
In addition to above mentioned software, you will have to learn some other software named as XHTML and CSS. XHTML stands for Extensible Hypertext Markup Language and CSS stands for Cascading Stylesheets. This is indeed the foundation to start learning the basics of website designing. If you happen to learn both these websites, you may know that XHTML will help you control the basic structure of the website while CSS stands for the layout of the website.
Most of the these software will make a static website but if you have plans to work on dynamic site, you should move on to software like PHP and MYSQL. In some cases, you do not have to design the individual page of the website. All you have to do is design one template and all other pages will be built on that same theme. You will have also had to create a website server which will help you work on scripts locally without an internet connection.
There is lot more thinking to do while you are in the field of website designing. You will have to fulfil your clients need and act according to what they wish for. This is not something which you must ever ignore as this is the key to success as a website designer. Always make your designed website compatible with all types of browsers like Google Chrome, Firefox and Opera. You should also be able to do mobile website designing as this is the advanced version of what you do.
