Student visa New Zealand is for international students who wish to come and study at an educational institution or language school in New Zealand for longer than 3 months. You will have to have an offer of a place from a New Zealand institution and funds to pay school fees and have accommodation. You don’t need a New Zealand student visa if you are a citizen of New Zealand or Australia, you hold a New Zealand residence class visa, or you are the holder of a current Australian permanent residence visa including a current Australian resident return visa.

An offer of place must include:

• The education provider name and contact detail

• The name of the course and the minimum time required for completing it

• Proof that the course and the course provider meet New Zealand’s requirements for international students

• The amount of the fee for the complete course

• Whether you have to pay the course

• Whether the fees are domestic or foreign fees

• Whether your study is full-time or part-time

You will need to have evidence that you will leave New Zealand at the end of studies and have sufficient fund to pay the fees and for the living expenses. You must also have a passport valid at least 3 months past the intended stay. You can work for part-time while studying full-time if you meet course requirements for practical work experience or during holidays for 20 hours in any given week during the academic year and on completion of the course as postgraduate students.

Any student regardless of institution type who successfully completes a course in New Zealand resulting in a qualification that would get points under the skilled migrant category will be eligible to apply for a 6 month open work permit. Once you have secured relevant employment you can apply for either a post study 2 years work permit.
