The process of railway reservation has changed a lot. The services have also improved over the last few years. Earlier in order to reserve tickets and check status, one has to call the switchboard of Indian railways. However technology upgrades has resulted in much more streamlined and easily accessible channels.

When you book a ticket, you are provided with a PNR number. PNR means passenger name record. It is a 10 digit unique number which gets created by Indian railways central reservation system. After proving personal details like name, gender, age and train preference and making the payment, you are issued a PNR number. You should carefully keep this PNR number as it will be asked every time by railway authorities for any modifications or changes. The PNR is mainly used to check your ticket status- confirmed or not. Once you enter PNR, you can check train number, train name, journey date, source station, destination station, boarding point, and boarding status, class (1 AC, 2AC, 3 AC).

There are multiple ways to find PNR status:

Online: To get PNR status online is extremely simple process. Just visit the website and click on PNR status. You will be provided with the current status such as whether the tickets has been confirmed or not, whether waiting list number has improved or not and train details.

SMS: Since most people have mobiles these days, Indian railways have introduced checking PNR status from mobile. You can now easily check reservations with your mobile. You can now just send an SMS to railways and you will be reverted back with current PNR in matter of minutes. The SMS facility will apprise you with train alert (late, on time etc), train status, train schedule, train fare etc. You can send SMS to 57886 to get information on your mobile. There are as set of commands for different queries and you can get them by sending SMS with command TRAIN to the number 5676747. A random example will explain the same very clearly. Example- Send PNR 1234567890 to the number provided above, the reply would be like W32/W10 which basically means that you set which was number 32 in waiting list has improved to number 10 at the time SMS was sent.

Telephone: You can also get PNR status from telephone. From your fixed landline (Airtel, Vodafone etc), you can call 139 and put PNR number. You will be given current status
