Planning a Tour of Amman and Its Surroundings
Amman, the capital city of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is a popular tourist destination. It is one of the major cities of the Middle East. When visiting Amman, you can plan a walking, cycling, car or special operator tour of the city and its surroundings.
Walking and cycling tours of the city take you around its main places of interest. These include the world famous Roman Amphitheatre, built in the 2nd century AD and restored in 1957, the Roman ruins of the Odeon and the ornamental fountains (also known as Nymphaeum). The Hill City of the Citadel (Jabal al-Qal’a) features Byzantine church ruins as well as the National Archaeological Museum.
Touring the surroundings by car or by booking a tour operator can take you on daytrips visiting the Dead Sea, Petra or Jerash. The Dead Sea, close to Jerusalem, is famous for its high concentration of salt. It is some 1,400 feet below sea level. The Dead Sea is also a health resort, with many shops and centres selling skin products.
Petra is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It features architecture cut directly out of the hillsides of Mount Hor. Jerash is famous for being one of the best-preserved Roman cities. It features many original temples and colonnaded roads.
