South Devon is the perfect place to escape for a romantic break for two or an action packed week with the family. There is much to offer, from the glorious dramatic coastline and beaches to the stunning Dartmoor National Park, not forgetting the array of attractions such as Paignton Zoo, Geopark, Kents Cavern, Living Coasts and Greenway Gardens the home of Agatha Christie and Babbacombe Model Village near Torquay.

Other than attractions, the popular coastline provides an excellent opportunity to try out some fantastic activities and water sports, from surfing, kite surfing and sea kayaking to coastal walking, sailing and coasteering, the area has much to offer.

1. Accommodation in South Devon

For those looking for accommodation in the South Devon area you won’t be disappointed. There are a variety of places to stay from beach hotels in Devon, self catering cottages in the heart of the countryside to Farm bed and breakfast. Alternatively there are many camping and caravan sites throughout the area.

2. South Devon Activities

Some of the UK's best beaches are situated in Devon. The south coast offers Bantham and Bigbury on Sea which are large sandy beaches great for families.

Many of the larger beaches have toilet facilities and cafes, such as Bigbury on Sea and Blackpool Sands, making a perfect day out without any worries. The north of Devon also has a fantastic array of sandy shores, such as Croyde Bay or Saunton Sands, which are again great for families and also very popular with surfers.

3. Dartmoor National Park

The Dartmoor National Park is a haven for walkers and hikers, as well as mountain bikers. This extensive moorland is dotted with stone circles, cairns and stone rows which all date back from the Bronze Age. There are a number of walks to experience, whether you decide to walk independently or with an organised tour. Recommended walking trails include...

4. Coastal Towns

There are a number of breathtaking coastal towns which are worth visiting if you decide to make the trip down to Devon. On the south coast there such picturesque towns include Salcombe with its narrow streets lined with quaint, specialist shops and galleries and Dartmouth which has fabulous views overlooking the River Dart and is renowned for its restaurants and hotels, which embrace their country and coastal location and use freshly sourced local produce.

5. World Geo Park Status

In September 2007 the English Riviera received international recognition for its rich geological, historical and cultural heritage, it became one of just 57 areas around the world to endorsed by UNESCO and welcomed into both the European and Global Geopark Networks.

The English Riviera resort towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham lie, like a be-jewelled necklace, around one of the most beautiful bays in England. The resort is a top destination for visitors from around the country and indeed the world and its history as a popular resort stretches back centuries.

Today the resort continues to attract, entertain and rejuvenate a wide range of visitors who choose their holiday to suit - the sophisticated continental style of Torquay, the lively seaside fun of Paignton or the colourful maritime character of Brixham.
