Weekend Beach Fun at Alibaug
If a relaxing weekend is what you crave for then Alibaug is just the place for you. For people of Mumbai and Pune this place is just a few hours away, infact for people of Mumbai there is a ferry ride from Gateway of India which takes about an hour to reach. Being a popular weekend tourist stop there are many hotels in Alibaug that can accommodate the weekend crowd.
If you do not want to spend the whole weekend then there are many resorts in Alibaug where you can spend a relaxing day by the pool and enjoy some delicious sea food. Today though Alibaug is more commercialized there are still many places where the rustic village charm is intact.
Alibaug has a history of more than 300 years. Alibag was developed in 17th Century by Sarkhel Kanhoji Aangre the naval chief of King Shivaji's Kingdom. Also the town and its surrounding villages are the historic hinterland of Bene Israeli Jews. Bene Israelite Ali was a rich man and owned many plantations of mangoes, coconuts in his gardens. So the local people called the place Alichi bagh(Gardens of Ali) and that’s how the name Alibaug came to existence.
In Alibaug hotels vary in size and grandeur, you have proper 5 star hotels where affluent families go for weekends and you have the budget hotels where college kids and young couples go. Hotels in Alibaug beach are more expensive than hotels which are away from the beach.
Places to visit in Alibaug include Alibag beach, Alibag Fort, Thal beach, Varsoli Beach, Akshi Beach, the specialty of this beach is the beautiful slivery white sand, literally dazzling silvery on this clean beach. It is a favourite spot for advertising, TV serial and film shoots. Nagaon beach, Kihim-Navgaon Beach, Awas, SaswaneRewas, Chaul Revdanda.
Kaneshwar Mandir is very famous for its Shiv temple which stands on a 900 ft. high hill. It is a 5000 ft. long climb on well paved stairs, which takes around one hour. The special attraction is an ancient sweet water tank enclosed in traditional structure of black stone. The ancient temple was built by Raja Ramdeorai yadav. Every year, there is a fair on Kartik Poornima in Hindu calender. Mandawa: It is situated about 20 km north of Alibag. Many Bollywood celebrities own bungalows here. Kashid Beach is one of the most popular beaches near Alibaug and Korlai Beach.
