If your passport is not valid, police may take you in for questioning. You will also have a difficult time leaving the country. China visas for US citizens are not difficult to get, but you must be sure you get the right one for your visit. There are a number of different visas to choose from, including a tourist visa, work visa, and student visa. This will determine how many times you can enter and exit the country, as well as how long you can legally stay there. If you do not have the correct visa, you may not be able to work or go to school. This is why applying for the right visa is critical.

Once you have arrived in China, you will need to register your visa and passport. You can usually do this with the hotel you are staying in. If your hotel does not do it, or if you are staying with family or friends, find an authorized travel document office to register for you. This is also extremely important, so that you can stay in the country without any problems.
