The Worst Roads in the US and How to Avoid Them

By Bgiles Subscribe to RSS | August 8th 2012 | Views:

The United States is home to some of the world's best known roads and driving routes. Such an extensive road network can be difficult to keep in peak condition all year round, particularly following winter when damage from snow ploughs and chained tires can be expensive to repair. Every driver has their own ideas about what may constitute the worst roads in the country, but analyzing factors such as the condition of the road, congestion during rush hours, the number of accidents and fatalities reported and the condition of bridges and overpasses, it becomes easier to take a comprehensive view.

It may come as no surprise that some of the worst road infrastructure in the US can be found in Louisiana, which has endured its share of hardships in recent years, particularly following hurricanes. This state has one of the highest numbers of road fatalities, and many roads have also been found to be in generally poor condition. On the positive side, the Federal Highway Fund has invested significantly in the redevelopment of Louisiana's roads in recent years, which should lead to major improvements in the near future.

Other states may not be receiving the funding necessary to carry out such improvements however, North Carolina, for example has high numbers of deficient road bridges and substantial congestion. Residents are hopeful that redevelopment projects in other aspects of state funding, such as solar panel installation by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, will free up much-needed funds that can be used where it matters.

Even some of the US' most popular driving routes aren't without their problems, as significant stretches of iconic Route 66 are also in need of repair, particularly within the borders of Oklahoma. This state offers one of the worst mileages in the US, though a report on road safety produced in 2009 has been addressing the number of fatalities on Oklahoma roads.

If you're concerned about driving on low quality roads having an impact on your mileage, putting your safety at risk or increasing the likelihood of windshield repair and other auto repair services being needed, it's always advisable to check traffic reports and speak to people you know to get recommendations for alternative routes. Having your car serviced before setting off on long distance road trips can also lower the risk of something going wrong.
