The Wonders of Copenhagen

Copenhagen is often voted one of the best places to live in the world and it’s easy to see why. The parks and canals, exquisite architecture and friendly people make Copenhagen a top Scandinavian destination.

The beautiful Tivoli Gardens are a definite must if you’re heading to Copenhagen in the summer. One of the oldest amusement parks in the world, Tivoli is a great spot for the entire family. There are plenty of park rides, including an old wooden roller coaster, as well a wealth of flowers and gardens to explore. Make sure to stop by the aquarium to see the 30-metre long tropical reef. There are many special events, musical concerts and art performances held at the park, so you may want to take a look before you go to see what’s on. You may want to set aside a full day for exploring Tivoli, as there is a lot to see and do.

Christiansborg is a palace in the centre of Copenhagen that houses the Danish parliament. It is located on a small island surrounded by a canal. Many areas of the palace are open to the public. Check out the ruins under the palace, the royal reception rooms, the palace chapel and the museum while you’re there. You can take a guided tour of most of Christiansborg’s attractions while there. Make sure to check opening times before your trip, as some parts of the palace are closed during official functions.

The famous Little Mermaid statue is also something you may want to see while in Copenhagen. Located in Langelinie on a rock in the water, the statue, by sculptor Edvard Eriksen, was unveiled to the city on the 23rd August, 1913. The iconic Little Mermaid statue tells Danish author Hans Christian Anderson’s story of the same name. Thousands of people visit the statue every year, and tourists and locals alike celebrate her birthday in August every year. You may want to pack a picnic and your walking shoes, as Langelinie has a beautiful promenade along the water.

These are just a few of the top attractions in Copenhagen. As with most trips, you’d be wise to plan ahead before going. The city gets very busy, especially during the summer, so book flights and a hotel in Copenhagen early. If you want to truly feel like a local, rent a bike and see the city as many local residents do every day.
