Most Famous and Dangerous Volcanoes of the World

By Treeves Subscribe to RSS | December 29th 2011 | Views:

Volcanoes are some of nature's volatile features that give chill tremor and sleepless nights to those living in the vicinity. Volcanic eruptions wreak havoc and results in destruction of property and human fatalities. Many civilizations are lost into these sudden disastrous violent volcanic eruptions. Volcanic gases like sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen fluoride and many others escape into the atmosphere when magma rises to the Earth's surface and erupt. These gases dissolve into the air and get collected in water and soil which is a great threat to people, animals, and vegetation. As I researched for information on my computer wired to Verizon FiOS Internet, I got to know about some of the grave volcanoes that are still active. There are over 600 volcanoes on our planet and one can easily remember famous names like Mount Vesuvius. Read on below for some of the dangerous volcanoes that are still active and have contributed to the nature's contamination.

Chaiten Volcano

Chaiten located in Southern Chile began to erupt violently on May 2008 after a silence of more than 9000 years and is still active. The caldera rim of Chaiten reaches 1,122 meters above sea level and is 3 km in diameter. The eruption produced numerous plumes of ash, spewed pyroclastic flows and lahars into the atmosphere, building a new lava dome and caused serious damage to the nearby towns inundating it with lahars and ash and inducing a great ordeal for the inhabitants. The floods of ash blanketed the town forcing the town's people to evacuate by boat. The consequences of the eruption that resulted in an avalanche of volcanic ash and mud down have disrupted life in the surrounding countries till now.

Mayon Volcano

The Mayon Volcano located in the Philippines is one of the most active volcanoes with a history of being erupted over 49 times in the past 400 years. Mayon has a classic conical shape of a stratovolcano named after a legendary folk Daragang magayon. The most perfectly formed symmetrical cone volcano is one of the beautiful volcanic cones of the world and is an attraction of Philippines. Tens of thousands of people living within the locality were forced to evacuate because of an anticipated major eruption. The past eruptions of mud and ash flows have cause fatalities.

Kilauea is the youngest active shield volcano that lies in the southeast part of the Hawaiian Islands and began eruption in January 1983 and continues to produce lava till date. There are layers of lava settled on the craters and lava erupting from the cone flows down the slopes anytime of the year. Kilauea has become a tourist attraction for this spectacular vision of live volcanic eruption that flows through a tube system and gets discharged into the sea. Kilauea volcanic eruption of small streams of lava cascading over the sea cliff, and entering the ocean is one of five shield volcanoes that together form the Big Island. Kilauea volcano has its own magma-plumbing system that erupts through the vents on the surface, moving slowly into the sea.

Mount St Helens

Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcanoes located in Skamania County, Washington and erupted in 1980 that wreaked havoc on the people. It was the only significant and worst one to occur in the history of United States. Shaken by an earthquake and a strong explosion, the eruption lead to the collapse of the north face of this tall symmetrical mountain and resulted in massive avalanche debris. The eruption and the avalanche turned the forest slopes into a gray, lifeless landscape with gray ash surrounding the mountain disrupting the lives of thousands.
