Itero and Burgos - Worth Visiting Places in Spain

By Pearsone Fernandez Subscribe to RSS | December 6th 2011 | Views:

Burgos is an important ancient province that falls on the well-known tourist route- “The Way of Saint James”. The modern day city of Burgos forms a prominent crossway in Northern Spain that is marked by the famous Camino de Santiago which runs parallel to River Arlanzon, throughout the city. Itero, a small municipality of Burgos, is a recognized and the most visited region.

Burgos is famous for landmarks like Cathedral of Burgos, Cartuja of Miraflores and the Las Huelgas Reales Monastery.

Let’s explore the legendary treasures of Itero and Burgos.

La Ruta de los Pueblos Del Norte:

“La Ruta de los Pueblos Del Norte” or the northern route offers a peaceful trip, far from the modern rush, towards the wilderness of medieval Spain.

Popular tourist sites of this route are Briviesca (an ancient stone bridge), the Sanctuary of Santa Casilda, the picturesque town of Medina de Pomar, impressive castle of Alcazar and the surrounding monasteries, the middle-aged village of Frias dominated by rock castles, the Romanesque abbey of Puentearenas (built during 11th century), the palace of Sedano and Espinosa de los Monteros, Moradillo de Sedano-the church as well as the famous temple- Rebolledo de la Torre built during 11th century.

La Ruta de Los Pueblos del Sur

La Ruta de Los Pueblos del Sur or the southern route houses the gothic church of Quintanilla de las Viñas, the stone-crafted towers- La Colegiata and Doña Urraca at Covarrubias. Salas de los Infantes and a monastery situated in Silos are other eye-catching artifacts. Other than this, Spanish towns like Peñaranda Del Duero plus Lerma are great attractions. Lastly, you can finish up your excursion by visiting the old fortress of Colegiata, dating back to 12th century.

Notorious is the life of Pedro I, nicknamed The Cruel. Married to Blanca de Bourbon, whom he did not love, he had her lover Prince Fadrique killed in the Royal Alcazar. Pedro I was mad with passion for Maria Fernandez Coronel, a noblewoman of Seville, and so imprisoned and killed her husband Juan de la Cerda. Maria hated Pedro and did not give in to his advances. Such was her virtue that she ended up pouring boiling oil on her own face in order to be disfigured and disliked by the king. The body of Maria lies in the choir of the Convent of Saint Ines.

Way of Saint James:

The main tourist attractions of this region are Belorado (famous for its square-shaped arcades) and Redecilla Del Camino (known for its ruins). Once you cross the mountainous terrain of Villafranca, you arrive at San Juan de Ortega which was named after a famous saint who built it in 12th century. Santo Domingo de la Calzada along with San Juan de Ortega forms the two most important architectural sites on this itinerary.

Other impressive artifacts include the castle and church of Olmillos (built in 16th century), the medieval fortress of Castrojeriz and the bridge as well as eleven arcs known as the Ponteroso, in Itero.

These were the prime attractions of Itero.
