Fly fishing in Colorado can be an unforgettable adventure, and can be a relaxing experience to share with a group of friends or as a family vacation. Planning your fly fishing trip to Colorado can take some research though, and it may be worthwhile to consult with seasoned fishermen or to charter a private tour to one of the many great locations available. If you do want to hire a tour guide to take you fly fishing, there a few tips to keep in mind. First, you want to decide whether a half day, full day or a weekend trip is what you have in mind. Second, you'll need to decide if you'd like to fly fish from a floating platform or boat, or fish while wading in a river. Finally, make sure to look for a guide that can take you on secluded tours of private water areas.

When deciding on which tour company to choose, there are a few more tips to keep in mind. Make sure to check whether the tour package includes rental of fly fishing equipment. If the tour does not include these items, be sure to bring them with you, along with plenty of bait and other accessories. Check to see if the tour plans for and includes lunch or dinner. If not, pack enough snacks and drinks to sustain your group throughout the duration of the tour. Talk to your tour guide before hand to arrange for transportation and to make plans for where you'll be going. Also be sure to agree on what time and where to meet your guide before you leave on your trip.

If you'd like to go on your own without a guide, there are other tips to keep in mind. If you're a novice at fly fishing, you may want to take some time to learn more about the hobby before doing it by yourself. Consider buying some books on the subject, taking classes and hiring a fly fishing tutor to teach you the basics during the weeks before your trip. Remember that Colorado requires a fishing license to fly fish in its rivers and lakes, so try to purchase those for everyone on the trip before heading out. Research what kind of fly fishing equipment best suits the needs of you and your group before purchasing those. You'll need to decide what type of rod length and weight, a long with what kind of fishing tackle best suit the needs for your trip. If you'll be bringing children a long, make sure to purchase child's size fishing rods.

These are just some basic tips to making the most out of your fly fishing experience in Colorado. As you become a seasoned fishermen, you'll learn more than a guide could ever teach you on what makes a successful trip. First hand experience will teach you everything from what type of sunscreen to bring, to what to wear and bring if you want to plan a winter fly fishing trip. Once you're experienced enough to learn what baits and lures work best, you may want to share your expertise with others. Someday, you may even want to teach fly fishing classes or act as a guide yourself.
