Presently two versions of USB are on the trade viz. USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.
A USB port can provide 5 volt power supply on a single cable from which connected gadgets may consume power. A device can draw 500 milliampere current from a USB 2.0 port and 900 milliampere current from a USB 3.0 port. USB devices are classified into two categories: high-power and low-power. One USB port can serve as power supplier to more than one low-power devices through a USB hub while high-power devices need to be connected to more than one USB port. USB is widely used for recharging batteries. The batteries of the devices like mobile phones, digital audio players, digital cameras etc, can be recharged using a usb charger. A USB port can supply up to 500 milliampere at 5 volt. USB charging ports are of two types: CDP (Charging Downstream Port) which supports data transfer, DCP (Dedicated Charging Port) which does not support data transfer. USB charging is also possible without using a computer with the help of USB AC adapters.. Some chargers provide the facility to draw power from AAA or AA batteries for emergency conditions.
