Stay Cool in the Summer While Saving Energy

By Philipstream Subscribe to RSS | December 2nd 2011 | Views:

In the middle of summer, it’s easy to overspend on air conditioning Germantown, MD in order to keep the home cool. It’s not uncommon at all to absently hit the thermostat, knocking it down a few degrees in order to cool the place down a little. Eventually, this can become incredibly expensive. Here are a few tips that you can put to use in order to make summer easy without having to spend a truckload of cash keeping your A/C running.

Get a Tune Up

Getting your air conditioner tuned up once a year is a great way to save money in the long run. It doesn’t cost much to have a professional from Don Hoffacker Air Conditioning come out and give it a once over, but it can save perhaps hundreds of dollars over the months of June through September. By spending just a little bit of money now, you can save yourself quite a few dollars in the long run. A tune up keeps the air conditioner running at its most efficient, not wasting electricity.

Keep the Home Insulated

Insulation doesn’t just keep the warmth in in the winter, it also keeps the coolness in the summer. This means that as good an idea as it may seem, leaving the window open all day isn’t a very good way to keep the home cool. If you really want to keep the place cool, keep the windows shut and close the vents in the laundry room, the bathroom and the kitchen when you don’t need them in use. Some people go so far as to tape tinfoil over their windows in order to keep the bright sunlight out and the cool air in. This seems a little extreme, but it can turn a room into an icebox if you don’t mind the unsightly appearance.

Stay Hydrated

Staying cool by drinking plenty of water means that you don’t have to worry about overheating, you can stay healthy and you’ll find it much easier to tolerate the high heat of summer. You can also try building up a tolerance to the heat. Try raising your thermostat one degree every week until you find a number that you find to be perfectly comfortable. Cranking it all the way down seems like a great idea at first, but when you see your electric bill, you’ll start to wonder how cool is too cool.

By keeping your air conditioner and your home both in peak condition, by being on the lookout for insulation gaps and by drinking plenty of water and keeping yourself hydrated and healthy, you can save a ton of money on air conditioning next summer. It’s always better to spend a penny today in order to keep you’re A/C running like new than it is to spend a dollar tomorrow getting it repaired, cranking it all the way down to sixty degrees or renting a motel room to ride out the hottest part of the summer while your A/C is replaced with a brand new one.
